Each OBIS folio can provide an enjoyable and interesting outdoor experience. You may use a series of activities for a particular area or purpose, use the entire program as a course of instruction, and select individual activities to suit your specific needs.
During the winter months, life gets interesting as the Northern Hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun and the days are shorter and colder. The further north you go in the United States, the more animals and plants are obligated to respond to the cold and reduction of food. Birds may leave breeding grounds and fly south, mammals hibernate or scavenge the foods that remain, and plants go dormant to protect themselves from freezing. It is a quieter time, but the world is still alive!
Our terrific webmasters at the Lawrence Hall of Science recently completed the OBIS website redesign for Outdoor Biology Instructional Strategies (OBIS). OBIS activities, originally created by FOSS developers from the Lawrence Hall of Science, can be used as outdoor investigations for various student learning ages and grade levels. This curriculum is available to educators for free (for a limited time only!).
